Appreciation means noticing that something is real, meaningful, and not yours to control.
When you truly appreciate G-d, or life, or existence itself, your mind doesn’t rush to comfort.
It slows down. It notices depth. You feel connected.
That’s how awe grows. This is how relationships begin.
With people, relationship starts through curiosity. With the Infinite, it starts through awe. Not all awe is the same. There is a lower awe that comes from observing nature.
And there is a higher awe that comes from appreciating the One behind it. Lower awe notices power. Higher awe carries trust.
Awe is not one feeling. It’s a meeting of several.
When appreciation is honest, three thoughts naturally arise:
1. Sadness — because you feel the distance between you and something greater.
2. Wonder — because you sense depth beyond what you understand.
3. Fear — because you realize your choices matter, and nothing is casual.
These aren’t negative. They mean you’re paying attention. Without appreciation, awe stays indirect.
It stays about what you observe, not about a relationship you are inside of.
Appreciation is what allows awe to deepen. Sadness opens meaning. Wonder opens depth.
Fear creates responsibility.
Together, they don’t overwhelm you. They place you.
Higher awe doesn’t make you feel crushed.
It helps you feel:
1. not in charge, but not ignored
2. not the center, but still noticed
3. not all-powerful, but still cared about
Appreciation is the practice.
Higher awe is the result.
Trust is the shift.
And that higher awe is how a real relationship with the Creator begins.
