“The desire for intimacy is the desire to not be alone inside yourself.”
It is made of movement. First there is pleasure.
Pleasure is the basic goodness of life, the fact that existence can be felt as valuable, meaningful, or fulfilling. Then pleasure becomes desire. Desire is when life reaches toward something. Toward love, safety, truth, closeness, beauty, relief, or meaning.
Then desire becomes emotion. Emotion is what desire feels like as it moves.
When desire is fulfilled, it may feel like joy.
When it is blocked, it may feel like anger.
When it is threatened, it may feel like fear.
When it loses something, it may feel like grief.
And then there is free choice. The Creator created something like Himself: a being that can choose. Free choice is what allows a person to work with these forces instead of just being dragged by them. You do not choose that you are created with pleasure, desire, and emotion. But you do choose what you develop, what you strengthen, what you feed, and what direction you give your inner world.
So pleasure, desire, emotions, and free choice are like the ingredients of creation.
They are part of how created life works:
1. pleasure gives life its root
2. desire gives life its movement
3. emotion gives life its inner experience
4. free choice gives life its responsibility
