The Rambam’s laws

about building a synagogue show that people need more than just the right ideas to feel the Creator’s presence.

“The Creator doesn’t need a building. you need help feeling his presence.”

The Creator is everywhere, but we are not aware everywhere, and our felt awareness changes throughout the day.

Our nervous systems get pulled into distraction and daily stress, so we need physical places that help us feel something different.

A synagogue that is higher, organized, and set apart helps the body understand that this is not a regular place and prayer is not a regular moment. The point is not that the Creator needs a building, but that we need help feeling awe in a real way.

Awe is a blend of sadness, fear, and wonder, and it helps us feel the truth of the relationship. Prayer is a time to share your inner world, beginning with joy and awe, and then everything else.

A relationship with the Creator begins again through feeling awe.
