Chassidus says:
Just being created already means disconnect.
Why?
Because to be “something” (yesh) is to feel apart from G-d. It’s built into existence. That’s why our soul yearns for connection. The deepest missing is… missing G-d.
But here’s the paradox:
If we were fully united, we’d vanish. No choice. No love. No awe.
So the “distance” isn’t punishment. It’s the space that makes closeness possible. And that longing? It’s not random.
Your longing/pain isn’t failure. It’s proof you’re alive. It’s the very fuel of connection. Because even our pain is part of the process, the way G-d’s unconditional love finds expression in a world that feels far from Him.
The “missing G-d” is what pushes us to seek Him endlessly, through study, commandments, repentance, and especially through awe and humility. ![]()
