Why is connecting with G-d so complicated?

I’ve spent years feeling overwhelmed about spirituality. Ever wonder why it feels like G-d is so far, like He’s hiding from you? You’re not alone.

Why Did G-d Choose to Hide?

Here’s the thing:

Before the beginning, G-d’s presence was literally everywhere. Infinite, perfect, completely connected. Then something unusual happened:

G-d chose to “hide” Himself. Why?

How Is This Like Raising a Child?

Because infinite connection means no room for you or me.No individual stories. No separate selves. But G-d desired a relationship. Think about creating and raising a child:

At first, when two people are physically close, they feel completely connected. A child is already possible within them. Because they want a real relationship with their child, they intentionally create space. First, the child is born, becoming separate physically. Then, parents step back emotionally, allowing their child room to grow and become their own person. This separation isn’t distance, it’s love/care making room for freedom and real connection.

What Is Tzimtzum in Kabbalah?

This stepping back mirrors what G-d did. This “stepping back” is called Tzimtzum in Kabbalah. It sounds fancy, but it’s simple:

1. G-d separated His “pleasure” (infinite unity) from His “love/care” (His desire to share and connect).

2. This separation created space for individual beings—like you and me (body/soul dynamic).

Why Does Tzimtzum Feel Like Loneliness?

But here’s the catch:

This separation also created ego, that feeling of being totally separate and alone. Ever feel that loneliness? Like you’re lost in your own head, disconnected from everything and everyone? That feeling is exactly what ‘Tzimtzum’ created. But why would G-d want you to feel lonely? Because loneliness is an invitation. It’s G-d saying, “I stepped back so you can freely choose to step closer.”

So what can you actually do?

1. Notice your loneliness as a nudge.

Ask yourself:

“What small step can I take right now to connect more deeply with myself and others?”

2. Reconnect compassion/care and pleasure in your own life:

Do one small thing each day that brings you joy and helps someone else through compassion and boundaries. When you do this, you slowly repair the original separation. You reconnect what G-d lovingly stepped back to let you experience: The joy of freely chosen connection.

Remember:

Loneliness isn’t a punishment, it’s G-d’s quiet invitation to come closer.

Questions people ask

Did G-d abandon us when He stepped back?

No. The stepping back that Kabbalah calls Tzimtzum was not G-d leaving. He set apart His “pleasure,” the infinite unity, from His “love and care,” the desire to share and connect — and it is that care making room. The space is there so the closeness you choose can be freely yours.

Why does G-d feel so far away?

Because infinite connection would leave no room for you or me — no individual stories and no separate selves. G-d wanted a real relationship, so He made space, the same way loving parents step back so a child can grow into their own person. The distance is room for freedom, not rejection.

Is loneliness a punishment from G-d?

No. Loneliness is an invitation. The same separation that made space for you also created ego, that feeling of being totally separate and alone. In that ache, G-d is quietly saying, “I stepped back so you can freely choose to step closer.” It is a nudge toward connection, never a punishment.

What can I do when the loneliness hits?

Treat the loneliness as a nudge and ask yourself what small step you can take right now to connect more deeply with yourself and others. Then reconnect care and pleasure: do one small thing each day that brings you joy and also helps someone else, through compassion and boundaries.
