The person who feels closest to the Creator is not always the person most focused on what the Creator wants.
Based on earlier Chabad Chassidus, the Rebbe explains this through three levels of Divine light [the way the Creator is expressed and revealed].
Each level has a different consciousness [what the light is focused on].

What Are the Three Levels of Divine Light?

All three require spiritual sensitivity [the ability to notice and feel the Creator more deeply through awe and love], and that sensitivity can be developed slowly through effort.

The soul is an expression of Divine light [the way the Creator is expressed and revealed].
It allows the human personality to feel awe and love toward the Creator and develop these different kinds of light consciousness.
The lowest level of the light’s humility [how completely it puts its Source before itself] says:
“I’m here to reveal my Source.”
Its bitul [putting its Source before itself] is built into what it is: light exists to reveal its Source.
In practical terms:
“What goodness does the Creator want me to express here?”

What Do the Higher Levels of Light Want?

A higher level develops through feeling attached to its Source [d’veikus] and begins to feel its Source more deeply.
It has a felt sense of how great its Source is, and staying connected starts to feel more important than being revealed.
Its consciousness becomes:
“I do not want to be separate from my Source.”

The highest level says:
“I want to become completely one with my Source.”
The Source feels so real that the light wants to return and become absorbed within it.

In a person, this would mean extraordinary awe, love, and felt closeness to the Creator.
During these times, very few people have a soul that can experience this level of relationship deeply and consistently.

From one perspective, this is the highest level.
The closer the light feels to its Source, the less important its own separate existence feels.

What Was the Light Created to Do?

But the Rebbe introduces another way to measure depth:
What was the light created to do?
Ohr [Divine light] exists for gilui [revealing its Source].
Its purpose is not only to feel close to its Source.

It is meant to reveal its Source within the world.
So the lowest level of light can express something extremely deep:
It is focused on why it exists.

This gives us two ways to measure spiritual depth.
One is:
“How deeply do I feel the Creator?”
How much awe, love, closeness, and desire for unity do I experience?

What Does the Creator Want From Me Now?

The other is:
“How deeply is my life focused on what the Creator wants?”
“What is my responsibility now?”
“What relationship needs repair?”
“What mitzvah [an action the Creator asks us to do] can I do?”
“What boundary needs to be respected?”
“What goodness does He want me to express here?”

The highest spiritual consciousness can still contain an element of self-interest.
“I want to be close.”
“I want to become one.”
The desire is extremely holy, but part of the experience is still about the closeness I want to feel.
A lower level can express something different:
“I do not want to be separate from what the Creator wants from me.”
The focus is no longer mainly on how much closeness I experience.

It is on what the relationship is asking from me.
But the higher level still has an important purpose.
Feeling deeper awe, love, and closeness can make the lower level much deeper.

Why Come Back Down to Ordinary Life?

You can return to ordinary life with a stronger sense of Who you are serving, why your actions matter, and what goodness you are here to reveal.
So the purpose of reaching higher is not only to stay in a higher experience.
It is to come back down and live the lower level with a deeper relationship.

That means you do not need to reach the highest spiritual experience to reach something extremely deep.

You might never experience extraordinary d’veikus [felt closeness and attachment to the Creator].
But you can still ask:
“What does the Creator want from me now?”
And answer through responsibility, mitzvos [actions the Creator asks us to do], improving your relationships and personality, and expressing more goodness inside ordinary physical life.

The purpose of creation is dirah betachtonim [for the Creator to be revealed within ordinary physical life].
So the deepest relationship is not reserved for the few people who can experience the highest spiritual states.

Can an Ordinary Person Reach the Deepest Relationship?

The highest level can deepen how close you feel to the Creator.
But its purpose is also to help you return to ordinary life and serve with greater depth.
An ordinary person can reach an extremely deep part of the relationship by making what the Creator wants more important than the spiritual experience they want to feel.

Sometimes the deepest bitul [putting what the Creator wants before what you want] is not wanting to disappear into the Creator.
It is staying here, inside the physical world, and asking:
“What goodness does the Creator want to express through me right now?”
