Awe is not just one feeling.

What is awe made of?

Awe is the felt awareness that you are living before something far beyond yourself, and in relationship with the Creator it contains wonder, humility, and healthy fear.

Wonder comes from noticing wisdom, beauty, and meaning that are far beyond what you fully understand.

Humility comes from realizing that you do not see the whole story, you are not in control of reality, and there is always more for you to understand.

Healthy fear comes from realizing that the relationship is real and your choices matter.

How does awe change the questions you ask?

When you feel awe, you stop acting as though you already understand everything.

And that changes your questions.

Instead of asking:

“How do I control this?”

“How do I avoid feeling this?”

“How do I win?”

“How do I prove I’m right?”

You start asking:

“What is this showing me?”

“What am I meant to learn?”

“How can I grow closer?”

“What don’t I understand yet?”

The deeper your awe becomes, the more curious, humble, and honest your questions become.

How does trust change the way awe feels?

Trust then changes how awe feels.

When you trust that the Creator is good, being in relationship with Someone infinitely beyond your understanding does not only feel scary.

You can approach Him.

You can ask questions.

You can admit that you do not understand.

You can stay in the relationship even when life is confusing.

That is how awe becomes the beginning of intimacy.

---

How does awe turn into love and longing?

Then love can grow deeper.

Love contains joy because you notice the goodness and closeness that are already revealed, and the intimacy can also contain sadness because you care enough to want more of that goodness and closeness to be revealed.

Joy says:

“I am grateful for the goodness I can already experience.”

Sadness says:

“I want more of Your goodness revealed.”

That sadness can become longing, and longing is one of the raw ingredients of love.

---

What kind of joy grows from awe?

Joy is not shallow happiness.

It is the pleasure of noticing goodness, receiving it, and experiencing it as part of your relationship with the Creator.

Without that deeper joy, it is easy to spend life searching for distraction, excitement, or temporary relief.

Awe helps you notice Who you are living before.

Trust helps you approach Him.

Love makes His goodness matter to you.

Joy lets you enjoy the goodness already revealed.

And sadness makes you long for more and motivate you to accept more responsibility.

Questions people ask

What three feelings combine to create awe?

Awe is the felt awareness that you are living before something far beyond yourself. In relationship with the Creator it holds three things at once: wonder at wisdom and beauty you do not fully understand, humility because you do not see the whole story, and healthy fear because the relationship is real and your choices matter.

Why does awe include fear?

The fear in awe is healthy fear. It comes from realizing that the relationship is real and that what you choose matters. When you trust that the Creator is good, standing before Someone far beyond your understanding stops feeling only scary. You can approach Him, ask questions, and admit that you do not understand.

What new questions does awe teach you to ask?

When you feel awe, you stop acting as though you already understand everything. Instead of asking how to control this, how to avoid feeling it, or how to prove you are right, you start asking what this is showing you, what you are meant to learn, and how you can grow closer. Deeper awe makes your questions more honest.

Which emotional skills does awe build?

Awe practices several emotional skills together. Awareness notices Who you are living before. Humility admits there is always more to understand. Curiosity turns control questions into learning questions. Trust lets you stay in the relationship when life is confusing. And feeling sadness safely turns longing into the responsibility to want more goodness revealed.

Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
