sign about exile

Some people build their whole life around avoiding a sadness their soul actually needs to feel.

What does Chassidus say about Jewish and gentile souls?

According to Chassidus, the Jewish soul and the soul of a non-Jew have different spiritual roles.

Different does not mean that one matters and the other does not. It means creation needs different kinds of people doing different kinds of work.

The Jewish soul is connected to Torah, mitzvos, and the work of making the Creator’s Oneness more revealed in physical life, while the nations also have a real purpose before the Creator through justice, honesty, responsibility, building healthy societies, and protecting human life.

Both are part of the purpose of creation.

What do the masculine and feminine metaphors explain?

There is a masculine and feminine metaphor that can help explain these different functions.

The Jewish people can be understood as having a feminine role in relation to the Creator: they receive His Torah and will, bring it inside themselves, live through it, and reveal it through physical life.

Receiving does not mean weakness or passivity. Pregnancy is a useful metaphor because something is received, but receiving begins a long process of carrying it, developing it, and eventually bringing something new into the world.

The Jewish people receive Torah and then have the responsibility to bring its truth into speech, food, money, relationships, family, business, prayer, and physical action.

The nations can be understood as having a more masculine role in relation to that mission, using strength, justice, order, courage, building, and responsibility to help create a physical world where goodness can live.

These are not statements about whether individual men or women are better at certain things.

They are metaphors for two different functions creation needs: receiving and revealing truth, and building and protecting the world where that truth can be lived.

A healthy world needs both.

Why is the gentile soul not the same as the animal soul?

This also helps clarify an important point about exile.

The gentile soul should not be used as a name for everything inside a Jewish person that wants appetite, comfort, distraction, control, or approval.

Chassidus has another idea for that struggle: the animal soul and the self-centered parts of the personality.

The struggle inside a Jewish person is between the part that wants to live before the Creator and the parts that can become absorbed in survival, appetite, status, comfort, control, people-pleasing, avoidance, or constant self-concern.

That inner struggle is one way exile becomes personal.

Part of you wants redemption, while another part says, “Just make me comfortable, give me approval, let me avoid this feeling, let me stay in control, and give me pleasure now.”

Sometimes an entire life can be built around never feeling what is underneath those patterns.

What is healthy sadness, and how does it become longing?

Sadness is especially important here.

Healthy sadness is not despair, and sadness itself is not awe.

Intimacy can contain sadness because when you love the Creator and trust that He is good, you care that more of His goodness could be revealed.

You begin to feel, “Why am I so far from the relationship I want, why am I living in ways that keep numbing what my soul wants, why is so much goodness still hidden, and why is Mashiach not here yet?”

That sadness can become longing.

And longing is one of the raw ingredients of love.

It can create the chutzpah to say:

“I do not want to accept this distance as normal.”

What does the G-dly soul actually want?

The Rebbe explained that the G-dly soul wants the Messianic era and does not want to spend its life living like an animal.

The soul does not want to remain trapped in appetite, people-pleasing, narcissistic patterns, avoidance, control, or constant self-concern. It wants truth, closeness, and a world where the Creator’s goodness is openly revealed.

That does not mean physical pleasure is bad. It means physical pleasure is supposed to become part of relationship instead of becoming a replacement for it.

Why does relationship with the Creator begin with awe?

And that relationship begins with awe.

Awe is the felt awareness:

“I am living before the Infinite Creator right now.”

Awe contains wonder because His wisdom and the depth of reality are far beyond what you can fully understand, humility because you are not the Source and do not control the whole story, and healthy fear because your choices are real and matter.

With another human being, relationship often begins with curiosity.

With the Infinite Creator, relationship begins with awe.

How does appreciation deepen awe, love, and joy?

Then appreciation can deepen awe and love.

When you notice what you have and recognize it as something you are receiving, the Creator becomes less abstract.

You begin to notice that you are receiving life, abilities, relationships, opportunities, and goodness right now.

That appreciation can deepen wonder and trust.

And when you trust that the Creator is good, awe can awaken deeper love.

Awe and love can cause joy to be felt because some of His goodness and closeness are already revealed and you realize life is a gift, and the intimacy can contain sadness because you want more of that goodness and closeness to be revealed.

That sadness can become desire for redemption that leads to accepting more responsibility.

Why do people numb the sadness their soul needs to feel?

This is why numbing matters.

Overeating, constant distraction, obsession with image or lifestyle, people-pleasing, avoidance, control, or narcissistic patterns can sometimes protect a person from feelings they do not know how to carry.

One of those feelings can be spiritual sadness: “I want more than this, I want more closeness, I want more truth, I want more of the Creator’s goodness revealed, and I want redemption.”

If that sadness feels too painful, the nervous system can search for something easier to feel through food, approval, control, status, entertainment, or busyness.

But the goal is not to destroy desire or physical pleasure.

The goal is to listen closely enough to discover what the deeper desire is asking for.

Sometimes underneath the desire for more pleasure is a soul saying:

“I want more relationship.”

And underneath the sadness of exile is love saying:

“I know more goodness can be revealed.”

Questions people ask

Why does Chassidus say the Jewish soul and the soul of a non-Jew have different roles?

Different does not mean one matters and the other does not. Chassidus teaches that creation needs different kinds of work: the Jewish soul is connected to Torah and mitzvos, while the nations build the world through justice, honesty, responsibility, and protecting human life. Both are part of the purpose of creation.

What kinds of patterns come from the animal soul, according to Chassidus?

Chassidus says the animal soul and the self-centered parts of the personality can become absorbed in survival, appetite, status, comfort, control, people-pleasing, avoidance, or constant self-concern. The struggle inside a Jewish person is between the part that wants to live before the Creator and these self-centered pulls, which is one way exile becomes personal.

Is spiritual sadness the same as despair?

No. Healthy sadness is not despair. It grows from loving the Creator and caring that more of His goodness could be revealed, so it turns into longing, and longing is one of the raw ingredients of love. Feeling sadness safely is an emotional skill, and it can lead to accepting more responsibility.

Which emotional skills does this teaching ask a person to practice?

Awe is the first one: the felt awareness that you are living before the Infinite Creator right now. Appreciation comes next, noticing what you are receiving. Then comes feeling sadness safely instead of numbing it with food, approval, control, status, or busyness, and listening closely to what the deeper desire is asking for.

“Exile is not only where you live. it is what you keep distracting yourself from feeling.”

The blog lists all the difference patterns to study, understanding patterns is how one can develop 'Daas' [felt knowing].
Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
