A person can know, “This is painful,” “This is tragic,” or “This should make me sad,” but the sadness itself is not felt.
Instead, they may experience the situation as humorous, even in a dark way, or they may only feel anger.
They understand the sadness through their imagination, but their nervous system does not feel it.
Where does emotional numbness come from?
This numbness does not always begin with one traumatic event. It is often inherited as a family pattern: do not feel too much, do not speak too honestly, stay functional, and survive.
Anger can sometimes break through numbness because it gives the nervous system a feeling of control, while sadness can feel too exposed or helpless.
⸻
That helps explain why many people do not feel awe.
Why do many people not feel awe?
If even ordinary sadness can become something a person understands but does not feel, then awe can also become something a person explains but does not experience.
Awe is not simply believing that life has meaning.
Healthy awe is a blend of fear and wonder that develops when a person notices patterns through curiosity, analyzes them honestly, and begins to feel what they reveal.
It is healthy to feel awe toward nature.
Nature can help a person feel wonder, humility, beauty, and the sense that life is larger than their immediate stress.
But awe toward nature is not the deepest form of awe.
What happens when awe leads to the Creator?
It is healthier for the nervous system when awe leads a person to the Creator, because then the feeling of meaning is not only about beauty or vastness.
It becomes connected to relationship, responsibility, goodness, and purpose.
And when awe toward the Creator is felt, life feels more meaningful and a relationship with Him is happening.
Not in a fake positive way.
In a grounded way.
A person begins to feel that their choices matter, that goodness matters, that suffering is not the whole story, and that life is happening before the Creator.
That is healthy for the nervous system.
⸻
The nervous system was not made to live only in numbness, distraction, panic, or survival (like people pleasing, avoidance or narcissism).
What does awe toward the Creator feel like?
It is healthier for a person to live with a felt sense that life has meaning, that their choices matter, and that they are in relationship with the Creator.
Awe toward the Creator causes love to be felt when you trust He is good and that love includes sadness, because His goodness could be more revealed.
The awe itself contains fear, because my choices matter before Him.
It contains wonder, because the Infinite Creator wants human beings to reveal goodness, and our choices give Him pleasure without changing Him.
Awe deepens through expressing appreciation.
But when a person is emotionally numb, they may understand the words, agree with the ideas, and even explain them clearly, while the feeling is still not felt.
⸻
That is why deep meditation matters, ideas that can slowly change who you are.
Why does deep meditation matter?
A person may need to sit with a truth again and again, slowly and honestly, until the emotional system begins to feel what the mind already knows.
But sometimes the numbness is so intense that even a light felt sense of awe is not enough to guide a person to act wisely.
They may feel a small moment of meaning, sadness, fear, or wonder, but the old numbness, avoidance, shame, or survival pattern (like people pleasing) is still stronger.
Those patterns may have been practiced for years or even passed down through generations, so they are not replaced by one emotional experience.
They are reshaped through repeated wise choices.
⸻
That is why awe also needs inner strength.
How does inner strength grow?
Inner strength is developed when a person practices self-reflection even before the feeling is strong.
They ask themselves:
“What truth do I already know, even if I do not feel it deeply yet?”
“What wise choice would I make if numbness was not leading me?”
“What responsibility belongs to me right now?”
“What boundary, act of honesty, or act of goodness can I choose even without strong emotion?”
“What pain am I avoiding?”
“What pattern becomes stronger if I ignore what I know is true?”
“What kind of person am I training myself to become through this choice?”
These questions help a person stop waiting for a strong feeling before they act wisely.
Because healing is not only learning to feel awe.
It is also learning to live according to truth until awe becomes strong enough to be felt more deeply.
Questions people ask
Why can I understand sadness without feeling it?
Emotional numbness can become so intense that sadness is only understood, not felt. A person knows a situation is painful or tragic, and their imagination can explain the sadness, but their nervous system does not feel it. Instead of grief they may experience the moment as dark humor, or feel only anger.
Why do I feel anger instead of sadness?
Anger can sometimes break through numbness because it gives the nervous system a feeling of control, while sadness can feel too exposed or helpless. So a painful moment may arrive as anger rather than as grief, and the sadness stays something the mind understands instead of something the nervous system feels.
Is emotional numbness always caused by one traumatic event?
Not always. This numbness does not always begin with one traumatic event. It is often inherited as a family pattern: do not feel too much, do not speak too honestly, stay functional, and survive. Patterns practiced for years, or passed down through generations, are not replaced by one emotional experience.
What helps when you do not feel awe?
Deep meditation helps, because a person may need to sit with a truth again and again, slowly and honestly, until the emotional system begins to feel what the mind already knows. Inner strength helps too. It is developed when a person practices self-reflection even before the feeling is strong, and old patterns are reshaped through repeated wise choices.

The blog lists all the difference patterns to study, understanding patterns is how one can develop 'Daas' [felt knowing].
Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
