You are finite.
The Creator is Infinite.
You are created.
He is the Source of everything.
So closeness cannot mean becoming alike.
A subject does not become the king in order to have a relationship with him.

Why is kingship a picture of closeness with the Creator?
This is why kingship is such an important picture for understanding the relationship between the finite and the Infinite.
The king remains beyond the subject.
The subject remains a separate person with real choices.
And yet they can become deeply connected when the subject chooses to make the king’s will their own.
The Creator gives us instructions that express what He wants.
When you choose to live through that will, something finite and something Infinite meet.
Not because you became Infinite.
Not because you understood everything.
But because your choice is now expressing His will.
That is a deeper kind of oneness.

Why can following an instruction still feel empty?
But action alone does not mean you will feel the relationship.
You can follow an instruction while feeling controlled, afraid, numb, or disconnected.
The emotional relationship begins with awe.

“I am living before the Infinite Creator right now.”
That awareness contains wonder, because His wisdom and the depth of reality are far beyond what you can understand.
It contains humility, because you are not the Source, you do not see the whole story, and reality is not under your control.
And it contains healthy fear, because your choices really matter.
That is what makes the action personal.
You are no longer only thinking:
“This is something I am supposed to do.”
You begin thinking:
“I am choosing how to live before the Creator right now.”

“I want to know You more.”
“I want to feel Your closeness more clearly.”

That sadness can become longing.
And longing makes you want to bring more of your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and actions into the relationship.

This is where action becomes much deeper than obedience.
You can stop before an action and remember:
“The Creator wants this.”
“I am choosing this.”
“This is one place where my will can meet His will.”
The physical action may look simple.
But the relationship inside it can contain awe, trust, appreciation, love, joy, sadness, and longing.
That is how ordinary life becomes a place of closeness.
