Sometimes love doesn’t begin with joy. It begins with missing.
Can sadness become longing for G-d?
When you feel sadness because you want to feel closer to G-d, that sadness can become longing.
And longing is one of the raw ingredients of love.
What is awe, and how does love grow from it?
Awe comes first in a different way.
Awe is the feeling that you are living before the Creator right now. You notice His greatness, His wisdom, how little you understand, and how meaningful your choices are.
Then love can grow inside that awareness and deepen awe.
You realize:
The Creator is infinitely beyond me.
And yet I can know Him.
I can speak to Him.
I can become closer to Him.
That creates longing.
Is sadness the same as awe?
The sadness is not the awe itself. It is the pain inside intimacy when the closeness you want is not fully felt.
And that sadness does not have to become despair.
It can become:
“I want to know You more.”
“I want to feel closer to You.”
“I want more of Your goodness to be revealed.”
Salt in dough does not ruin the bread. It brings out its flavor.
In the same way, sadness can deepen love when the sadness comes from wanting greater closeness to G-d.
