Suffering is a metaphor for how intimate the Creator is willing to be with humanity

The Creator did not make a world where relationship only happens in light (goodness), clarity, pleasure, and success.

He made a world where even confusion, shame, loneliness, fear, failure, and pain can become places where a person searches for Him.

That does not mean suffering is good.

It means the Creator is so committed to intimacy with human beings that He allows the relationship to reach even the places that feel farthest from Him.

A shallow relationship only exists when things feel easy.

A deeper relationship can continue even when there is distance (shame), silence, and pain.

In Chassidus, this is part of the meaning of the lowest world (the human nervous system).

The Creator wanted His Oneness to be revealed specifically in a place where it can feel hidden.

Not because hiding is the goal, but because when goodness is revealed there, the relationship becomes deeper than it could have been in a world that only contained obvious light.

Suffering becomes the place where humanity learns how to say:

“I do not understand You, but I still want to find You.”

“I feel pain, but I do not want pain to become the whole story.”

“I feel distance, but I believe distance (shame) can also become part of relationship.”

That is why suffering can be seen as a metaphor for Divine intimacy.

Not because the Creator wants pain, but because He is willing for the relationship to go so deep that even pain can become part of the path toward revealed goodness.

The Alter Rebbe explains that relationship with the Creator begins when a person feels awe.

Awe includes sadness that His goodness can always be more revealed,

fear before His greatness as it means our choices matter,

and wonder that the Infinite Creator chooses to relate to a physical world. ⭕️

Deeper joy is felt after awe.
