Your body needs more than survival. It needs compassion and healthy boundaries.
Just as a young child needs compassion and healthy boundaries to grow and feel loved, your body needs both throughout your life.
What happens when your body does not get what it needs?
When you do not give your body the compassion and healthy boundaries (diet, exercise, rest) it needs, it can experience suffering. You might feel anxiety, shame, loneliness, emotional numbness, or a constant need to protect yourself.
When your body does not get what it needs, you can develop habits that help you feel safe but make healthy relationships harder.
You might learn to please others instead of expressing your needs, avoid difficult conversations instead of being honest, try to be perfect to feel valuable, or try to control relationships instead of building trust.
What kind of boundaries does your body need?
Your body needs boundaries that do more than protect it. It needs boundaries that allow it to feel a deeper connection with the Cause of existence.
Just as a two-year-old child wants to feel united with a loving parent, our bodies want to feel united with the Creator, the Source of life.
How is creation an expression of the Creator's compassion?
Chassidus [Jewish mysticism] explains what it means that the Creator is One, the ultimate Cause of existence, He doesn't lack wisdom, compassion or love. Everything depends on Him for its existence at every moment. Yet He freely chose to create a world where we feel separate from Him, with our own personalities, needs, desires, and responsibilities.
Creation is also an expression of deep compassion. The Creator lacks nothing, yet He freely chose to give even physical dust a place in His purpose. Through our physical bodies, something as limited as dust can become part of His unity and close relationship with Himself [through our acts of goodness and kindness].
The soul is an expression of the Creator's infinite goodness. It allows our limited bodies to feel awe, love, and joy.
Why did the Creator give us instructions?
When we feel awe and love toward the Cause of our existence, life feels more meaningful and alive. The Creator gave us instructions to help us feel these feelings more deeply through our physical lives.
These instructions teach us compassion, healthy boundaries, honesty, and responsibility [when we have healthy intentions]. When we do not follow them, we can miss opportunities to feel awe, love, and a deeper sense of meaning.
This offers another way to understand why the Hebrew Bible speaks about blessings and curses, life and death, closeness and distance. The Creator does not become closer or more distant, but our choices affect how deeply we feel our relationship with Him.
What is the goal of our physical lives?
Chassidus describes the purpose of creation as Dirah Betachtonim, making a home for the Creator in the physical world.
The goal is not to escape our bodies or lose our personalities. It is to give our bodies the compassion and healthy boundaries they need, allowing our physical lives to express the Creator's infinite goodness through awe, love, joy, and intimacy with Him [through having conversations with Him, and believing everything is an expression of Him].
