Emotional Immaturity Can Block Your Ability to Meditate on the Creator's Essence
You can understand deep spiritual ideas and still struggle to feel awe, love, or intimacy with the Creator.
One reason may be emotional immaturity.

Why must existence have one ultimate Cause?
There has to be One ultimate Cause of existence, or nothing would exist.
That Cause is what I mean when I speak about the Creator as the Source of existence. [You can recognize that existence has a Cause without believing that Cause has intelligence.]
The patterns of wisdom throughout creation give us another reason to wonder about the intelligence of that Cause.

Why do you need more than knowledge to meditate on Atzmus?
Chassidus [Jewish mysticism] teaches that Atzmus [the Creator's Essence] is beyond everything we can describe. His Essence does not lack wisdom, love, compassion, or pleasure, but none of these can define Him.
To meditate deeply on Atzmus, you need more than knowledge. You also need to learn how to appreciate something greater than yourself without feeling unimportant or afraid. This takes regular practice, because emotional maturity develops through repeatedly learning to appreciate, not from understanding an idea just once.
For example, someone who feels worthless when making mistakes may struggle to accept their limitations. Someone who needs to control others may struggle with trust. Someone who depends on approval may struggle to appreciate a relationship without focusing on what they receive.
These emotional patterns can make it harder to develop the awe and love that prepare us for deeper spiritual meditation.
How can protective patterns like people-pleasing change?
Understanding darkness can help
Fight (which often shows up as narcissism), flight (which is avoidance), freeze (which looks like inaction or shutdown), and fawn (people-pleasing) are ways the nervous system tries to protect us. But these patterns can also make healthy relationships harder.
The more you understand these patterns, the more you can appreciate how people can change their personalities.
People-pleasing can become real kindness. Avoidance can become courage. Controlling behavior can become healthy leadership.
Wondering about these changes can develop awe, compassion, and appreciation for the Creator's wisdom.
How do free choice, compassion, and pleasure relate to Atzmus?
Three deeper ideas to think about
In VeSamti Kadkod (5730) and Shir Hamaalos Mimaamakim (5731), the Lubavitcher Rebbe explains deep connections between free choice, compassion, and pleasure as they relate to Atzmus [the Creator's Essence], which is beyond all descriptions and does not lack any of these qualities. [Visit this profile for posts explaining these teachings.]
Free choice: The Creator freely chose to create, without needing anything. Can you choose goodness without needing approval or a reward?
Compassion: The deepest compassion does not depend on what someone deserves. Can you understand someone's suffering without making excuses for hurtful behavior?
Pleasure: Pleasure is a way of describing how deeply something matters. It does not mean the Creator gains anything, feels happier, or experiences any change. Can you appreciate how much a relationship matters without focusing on what you receive?
These three ideas help us think deeply about our relationship with Atzmus, without limiting or defining His Essence.
What emotional skills prepare you for deeper awe and love?
Building your emotional strength
Practice accepting your limitations without shame, understanding unhealthy behavior without making excuses, and expressing compassion while keeping healthy boundaries.
Then wonder:
What does it mean that the Creator needs absolutely nothing, yet freely chose that our limited physical lives could become part of His deepest purpose?
The goal is not to force spiritual feelings, but to develop the emotional maturity that makes deeper awe, love, trust, and intimacy possible.
You do not need to fully understand Atzmus to have a relationship with Him. Even practicing one of His instructions can express a connection beyond what the mind can understand.
