Chassidus explains its purpose.
Together, they explain why healing has always been humanity's greatest responsibility.
Humanity has needed more than 5,000 years to begin learning how to explain that the Creator needs us.
Not because the Infinite Creator is missing something, but because He chose a purpose that human beings are needed to complete.
He loved humanity before creation began.
The Creator's love is so great that He chose to build a world where human beings could become His intimate partners in revealing goodness.
Because of that love, He placed something of Himself within the human soul (a part of the human personality): the ability to think, choose freely, create, and form a relationship with Him.
He placed that freedom and intelligence inside a human form that can experience itself as separate from its Source.
That feeling of separation made freedom possible.
It also made healing necessary.
What does the Midrash say about kindness and truth?
The Jewish sages began explaining why long before modern psychology existed.
──────────
A Midrash of rabbi Shimon describes the tension that existed before humanity was created.
Kindness said humanity should be created because human beings would perform acts of kindness.
Truth said humanity should not be created because human beings would be filled with falsehood.
The Creator cast Truth down to the earth and created humanity.
The Midrash then points to the verse:
“Truth will spring from the earth.” - Psalms 85:12
Truth was not destroyed.
It was placed within physical life so humanity could gradually bring it forward.
Creation could begin through kindness before humanity was fully capable of living according to truth.
Truth separating from kindness was part of the process that allowed an imperfect world to exist.
Our work is to bring them back together.
We bring truth into physical life by making honest choices, developing healthy relationships, studying the Creator’s wisdom, and allowing that wisdom to transform how we live.
What does Chassidus mean by light?
To understand why this work is so difficult, we first need to understand what Chassidus means by "light."
In the language of Chassidus, Kindness and Truth can be understood as expressions of the consciousness contained within the ancient vessels that could not yet hold the fullness of the Creator's light.
──────────
Why has this been so difficult?
Because survival mode was built into the structure of creation.
In Chassidus, the Creator’s first expression toward creation is called light.
Light is not physical.
It is the Creator’s way of communicating His goodness.
Its consciousness is:
"I'm here to reveal goodness"
"I notice my my Source and it is beyond what I can reveal"
“I desire to be united with my Source.”
Light desires pleasurable giving.
It receives from its Source so that it can reveal goodness to creation.
Light is the Creator’s love language toward creation.
A sensitivity has to be developed for that consciousness to become part of a human personality.
One purpose of healing is to become a vessel capable of receiving the consciousness the Creator was already giving through His light.
When that sensitivity is missing, we can ask the Creator to awaken it.
King David gives us words to say:
“Why do You sleep, my [spark of] G-d? Wake up! Arise and motivate me once again.”
When emotional numbness is intense, it is often not enough to ask once.
We may need to say it again and again, or use one of King David's many other prayers (they give language to plead with and express appreciation to the Creator),
until the consciousness of light gradually becomes part of our personality.
As that consciousness grows, we become more responsible, more capable of relationship, and better able to hold the Creator's goodness.
──────────
Why is developing this consciousness so important?
Because creation itself began with vessels that could not yet hold it.
The ancient vessels could not hold the intensity of that light.
The story of the ancient vessels becomes surprisingly relatable when viewed through the language of modern psychology.
In the language of modern psychology, they lacked the inner capacity needed to receive such great goodness without breaking apart.
Human beings develop that capacity through emotional skills such as curiosity, compassion, boundaries, self-forgiveness, and responsibility.
King David worked intensely to develop this kind of personality.
His prayers show a person repeatedly asking the Creator to awaken greater sensitivity, desire, courage, and responsibility within him.
Where does generational trauma come from?
When the ancient vessels shattered, creation entered a reality of separation.
Seen through the language of modern psychology, that original separation can be understood as the deepest source of humanity’s trauma.
It has echoed through every generation as generational trauma. Separation naturally gives rise to fear, self-protection, and survival patterns.
Those patterns do not disappear in one generation.
They are passed through families, cultures, and societies.
──────────
Those survival patterns show up in everyday life in ways many people never recognize.
How do survival patterns show up in daily life?
Some of these patterns show up in subtle ways, like people-pleasing, an adaptive trauma response where a person learns to prioritize other people’s needs in order to feel safe, accepted, or loved.
People-pleasing can look like kindness, but it separates kindness from truth.
Kindness without truth avoids honest communication and healthy boundaries.
Truth without kindness can become harsh and destructive.
Healing allows kindness and truth to meet again inside a human personality.
Healing is not only about feeling better.
It is about developing the emotional skills that allow relationship to replace survival.
Curiosity helps us notice our patterns instead of reacting automatically.
Compassion helps wounded parts of ourselves feel safe enough to be known.
Boundaries help us tell the truth with kindness.
Self-forgiveness helps us learn from mistakes without giving up.
As these skills grow, survival patterns lose their grip, and truth and kindness become easier to live together.
Why is repairing the world so much work?
This is how the repair of the ancient vessels becomes the healing of human beings.
──────────
That is why repairing the world is so much work.
Humanity is not only building better technology or stronger civilizations.
We are slowly healing the emotional patterns that keep us living in survival instead of relationship.
As each person heals from generational trauma, they become a stronger vessel, more capable of holding the goodness contained within the ancient light that the ancient vessels could not contain.
The same light that once caused the ancient vessels to shatter can be received differently by healed human beings.
How are the ancient vessels repaired?
The ancient vessels are repaired through people becoming vessels that can receive goodness without collapsing into fear, self-protection, or separation.
──────────
As more of humanity heals, we become more capable of knowing the Creator as He wishes to be known—not only with our minds, but with transformed hearts and nervous systems that can receive more of His goodness.
Truth begins to spring from the earth when human beings bring honesty, kindness, wisdom, and awareness into physical life.
The human being who once felt separate becomes capable of freely choosing relationship.
Why does the Creator need human beings?
Without the experience of separation, there could be no real freedom, no chosen love, and no human partner capable of revealing the Creator’s goodness from within creation.
──────────
The Creator does not need us because He lacks anything.
He chose to make our participation necessary because He loved humanity before creation and desired a world where finite human beings would carry His freedom and intelligence into a life that can feel separate.
Creation began through kindness.
Humanity completes the work by becoming vessels that reunite truth and kindness, revealing the goodness the ancient light always contained.

Questions people ask
What is generational trauma?
Generational trauma is the way survival patterns pass from one generation to the next. When people live with fear and self-protection, those patterns do not disappear in one lifetime. They are passed through families, cultures, and societies, until someone develops the emotional skills to heal them.
Is people-pleasing a trauma response?
Yes. People-pleasing is an adaptive trauma response where a person learns to put other people's needs first in order to feel safe, accepted, or loved. It can look like kindness, but it separates kindness from truth, because it avoids honest communication and healthy boundaries.
How does healing break generational trauma?
Healing means growing the emotional skills that let relationship replace survival. Curiosity helps us notice our patterns. Compassion helps wounded parts of us feel safe. Boundaries help us tell the truth with kindness, and self-forgiveness helps us learn from mistakes. As these skills grow, survival patterns lose their grip.
Why did the Creator make people feel separate from Him?
Because the feeling of separation makes freedom possible. The Creator placed free choice and intelligence inside a human form that can feel separate from its Source. Without that experience of separation, there could be no real freedom, no chosen love, and no human partner able to reveal His goodness from within creation.
