Ulla taught:
“The Holy One, Blessed is He, has nothing in His world but the four amos of Halacha.”
— Talmud, Berachos 8a
Four amos is only about 6–8 feet.
Why would the Infinite Creator care so much about the small physical space around a human being?
Because Halacha is where relationship becomes action.
Halacha means Torah law: the Creator’s instructions for turning faith, awe, love, wisdom, and responsibility into choices that reveal His Oneness in ordinary life.
---
Why does what you eat, say, and spend matter?
Torah law is built on the belief that the physical world is not separate from the Creator’s purpose.
What you eat matters.
How you speak matters.
How you use money matters.
How you treat another person matters.
How you use your body matters.
Physical actions can reveal goodness, responsibility, relationship, and Oneness.
That is why saying only “the Creator is love” can give an incomplete picture.
If love is separated from responsibility, spirituality can become mainly about feeling comforted.
The Creator’s unconditional love does not remove responsibility.
It gives a person the strength to stay in relationship, repair mistakes, and choose how to live.
---
Does the Creator need anything from us?
The Creator does not need anything from creation.
Our actions do not complete Him or make Him more perfect.
Torah law exists for creation, giving finite human beings a way to take part in revealing His goodness and Oneness.
That does not make prayer, wisdom, awe, love, or spiritual feelings less important.
It means those inner experiences can become part of physical life.
Awe can change how you act.
Love can change how you give.
Compassion can become a boundary.
Gratitude can become generosity.
Responsibility can become repair.
Halacha gives inner relationship a physical form.
---
Why does relationship with the Creator begin with awe?
Awe is especially important because relationship with the Creator begins with awe.
Awe is the felt awareness:
“I am living before the Infinite Creator right now.”
It contains wonder because His wisdom and the depth of reality are far beyond what we can fully understand.
It contains humility because we are not the Source, we do not see the whole story, and reality is not under our control.
And it contains healthy fear because our choices are real and matter.
Then trust changes how that awe feels.
When you trust that the Creator is good, awe can awaken love.
That intimacy contains joy because some of His goodness and closeness are already revealed, and it can include sadness because you want more of His goodness and closeness to be revealed.
That sadness can become longing.
Halacha gives all of this somewhere to go.
---
What can intimacy teach us about Halacha?
Human beings live at the meeting point of an inner and physical world.
We think, feel, understand, choose, love, and give, while living through physical bodies in a physical world filled with desire and pleasure.
Halacha brings those parts of life together.
Intimacy helps explain why this matters.
You can tell someone you love them, trust them, and care about them, but a relationship cannot live through feelings alone.
Love has to become action.
You listen, give, respect boundaries, repair harm, and make choices that protect the relationship.
At the same time, physical closeness without trust, care, responsibility, and healthy boundaries can leave a person feeling even more alone.
Deep intimacy happens when inner relationship and physical action express the same purpose.
---
What does Oneness actually mean?
The same idea helps explain our relationship with the Creator.
Oneness does not mean that two different things become identical.
A human being remains finite while the Creator remains Infinite, and soul and body remain different even when they work together.
But different things can become deeply united when they express the same will and purpose.
The Creator gives an instruction, and a human being freely chooses:
“I want my action to express what You want.”
That is the meeting point.
The finite action becomes an expression of the Infinite Creator’s will.
---
This is why healthy intimacy does not erase boundaries.
It needs them.
Humility means recognizing that another person is real and separate from you, while compassion makes you care about their experience and boundaries tell you how to respect that difference.
The same basic pattern exists spiritually.
The Creator does not become human.
The human being does not become the Creator.
The difference remains.
And relationship happens across that difference.
That is why intimacy can help us understand Oneness.
Oneness does not require sameness.
Different parts can remain different while joining around one will and purpose.
---
Can physical pleasure be part of relationship?
This is especially important in the physical world.
Awe does not have to fight physical pleasure.
Love does not have to exist only during prayer.
The soul does not have to escape the body to express itself.
The Creator’s instructions teach a person how physical pleasure, money, speech, relationships, work, food, time, and the body itself can become part of relationship.
The soul can express itself through the body, love through giving, awe through responsibility, and free choice through physical actions that express the Creator’s will.
That is how the physical world begins revealing Oneness instead of hiding it.
---
Why did the Alter Rebbe describe the Creator as a King?
The Alter Rebbe explains that the Creator is Infinite and beyond every description.
A finite human being cannot relate to Infinity as it is in itself.
Kingship is the structure the Creator chose for relationship between the finite and the Infinite.
A king remains beyond the individual person, but his will can enter the person’s daily life through his instructions.
And a relationship with a king begins with awe.
You become aware:
“I am living before the King right now.”
You feel wonder at His greatness, humility because you are not the Source, and healthy fear because your choices before Him matter.
Without that felt awareness, you can have beliefs and opinions about the King without yet feeling that you are living in relationship with Him.
---
Then trust and love deepen that relationship.
When you trust that the King is good, His instructions stop being only demands from someone more powerful than you.
They can be experienced as gifts: ways the Infinite Creator allows a finite person to join His will.
Love then makes you want that closeness.
Joy comes from the goodness and closeness already revealed.
Sadness comes from wanting more of that goodness revealed.
And Halacha gives those feelings a way to become action.
---
Chassidus explains that creation fulfills the Creator’s desire for revealed goodness without causing any change in Him.
The Creator does not become more complete because we obey Him.
He does not need our actions in order to be whole.
The relationship is a gift to creation.
The Creator chose that our choices matter, and He gave us physical actions through which our will can meet His will.
That is what makes Halacha so deep.
---
What makes the four amos of Halacha so precious?
Halacha is how relationship with the Infinite enters ordinary human life. It reaches your food, money, speech, relationships, body, choices, and even an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.
When Halacha is lived with healthy awe, trust, and love, the physical world becomes a meeting place between things that seem opposite: soul and body, spiritual feeling and physical pleasure, human choice and the Creator’s will.
The opposites do not disappear.
They become united through shared will and purpose.
That is why Ulla’s four amos of Halacha are so precious.
The Infinite Creator does not need those 6–8 feet.
He chose those 6–8 feet as the place where a finite human being can turn relationship into action and reveal His Oneness inside ordinary physical life.
Based on Ulla’s teaching in the Talmud, as explained through Chassidus.
“Why would an infinite Creator care about 6-8 feet of space around a person?”

Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
