When the Jewish people were in Egypt, something very serious happened.

Our sages teach that most of them did not leave.

During the ninth plague, the plague of darkness, many Jews passed away.

Only a small group left Egypt, 1/5.

Why?

Because many did not want to leave.

Egypt felt normal.
It felt safe.

Even though it was hard, it was familiar.

They did not trust that the Creator would really bring them somewhere better.

(no self-esteem from Egyptian trauma)

So when redemption came, they were not ready.

Kabbalah teaches something very hopeful.

Why Will the Final Redemption Be Different?

The final redemption will not be like that.

This time, no Jew will be left behind.

Why?

Because over many years of exile, we have been learning.

We have been struggling.
We have been asking questions.
We have been trying to understand the Creator.

Slowly, we are learning to trust that He is good.

Not just in our minds.

But emotionally.

And trust changes what a person can feel.

How Do Trust and Curiosity Lead to Awe and Love?

When there is trust, appreciation becomes possible.

You start to notice what is being given.
You start to value it.

And from appreciation, awe and love begin to deepen.

Awe is not just one feeling.

It is a blend.

A kind of wonder,
that something so much greater than you can be known.

Fear and humility because you realize your choices matter and you can't understand everything.

Love is felt after awe when you trust the Creator is good.

Awe is the beginning of relationship with the Infinite.

Like curiosity is the beginning of relationship with a human.

Without curiosity, there is no connection.

Without awe, there is no relationship with the Creator.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that our generation has everything it needs.

How Can We Get Ready This Time?

All the learning is here.
All the teachings are here.

If a person studies, thinks, and asks honest questions, they can figure it out.

They can come to trust that the Creator is good.

And from that trust, something deeper can begin.

Intimacy can happen.

Intimacy means:

You care.
You talk.
You listen.
You try.
You trust.

In Egypt, many people were not ready for that trust.

In the future, everyone will be able to grow into it.

The first redemption left many behind.

The final redemption will bring everyone forward.

Because this time, we are learning how to trust.

And when trust grows,
appreciation follows.

And when appreciation grows,
awe and love deepen.

And awe is the beginning of relationship.

And relationship makes redemption possible for all of us.

Questions people ask

Why didn't more Jewish people leave Egypt during the Exodus?

Our sages teach that most Jews didn't leave Egypt at the Exodus. During the plague of darkness many died, and only about one in five left. Egypt still felt normal and safe, even though life there was hard, so many people had not yet learned to trust that the Creator would bring them somewhere better.

Will everyone be part of the final redemption?

Kabbalah teaches that the final redemption will not leave anyone behind. Over many years of exile we have been learning, struggling, and asking honest questions about the Creator. Slowly we are learning to trust Him, not only in our minds but emotionally, so this time everyone will be ready.

What does awe mean in a relationship with the Creator?

Awe is more than one feeling. It is a wonder that something far greater than you can be known, together with fear and humility, because your choices matter and you can't understand everything. Awe begins a relationship with the Infinite, the way curiosity begins one with a person, and love follows once you trust the Creator is good.

What did the Lubavitcher Rebbe teach about getting ready for redemption?

The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that our generation already has everything it needs, since all the learning and all the teachings are here. If a person studies, thinks, and asks honest questions, they can come to trust that the Creator is good, and a deeper intimacy can begin to grow.
