  • The Messiah will not only teach higher mystical ideas.

He will teach the kind of kavanah that helps people carry more responsibility.

Because the goal of spiritual knowledge is not to feel inspired for a moment.

The goal is to become more responsible before the King of the universe.

Kavanah means the mind and heart are directed toward the purpose of the act,

so the person becomes more emotionally available to The Creator,

more aware of what the act is meant to awaken, and more willing to carry responsibility.

So the deepest kavanah is not only:

“I am connecting to something holy.”

    It is also:

“I am standing before the King of the universe, and I am being trusted with more responsibility.”

    Why Relationship Means Responsibility

That matters because, in essence, we are not in the same category as The Creator.

The Creator is not a bigger version of a person.

So our connection to Him cannot come from similarity.

    It comes from relationship.

And relationship with the King of the universe means responsibility, and always feeling wonder, sadness, and fear.

Wonder because He is beyond anything the mind can fully understand.

Sadness because His goodness can always be more revealed.

Fear because being trusted by the King means our choices matter.

    A Different Kind of Spirituality

That is a very different kind of spirituality.

It does not make a person passive.

It does not make a person escape into mystical feelings.

    It teaches a person:

    “My thoughts matter.”

    “My words matter.”

    “My choices matter.”

    “My relationships matter.”

“My responsibility reveals something of The Creator’s purpose in the world.”

Mystical Ideas Must Change a Person

That may be one of the main things the Messiah teaches the righteous.

How to take the deepest ideas about The Creator and turn them into more responsibility, not less.

    More honesty.

    More courage.

    More self-control.

    More care for other people.

    More responsibility in prayer.

    More responsibility in commandments.

More responsibility in how one thinks, speaks, leads, repairs, and gives.

Rabbi Yossi Paltiel’s line, “When in doubt [with Kabbalah or Chassidus], say kavanah,” helps explain this.

If a mystical idea does not lead to better kavanah, the person probably has not understood its purpose yet.

And if kavanah does not lead to more responsibility, it is still incomplete.

    Standing Before the King

Because the goal is not just to know that The Creator is King.

The goal is to live like a person who stands before the King.

    1. Not casual.

    2. Responsible.

    3. Awake.

    4. Trusted.

    5. Needed.

That is the kind of kavanah the Messiah will teach:

ideas that help the righteous feel the greatness of The Creator deeply enough that they become more willing to carry more responsibility in His world.
