Why does a nigun reach the soul so quickly?

One of the quickest ways to feel spiritual emotions like awe, love, and desire is often through a nigun.

The Alter Rebbe’s nigun “Kol Dodi Dofek” is connected to the verse:

“I sleep, but my heart is awake. The voice of my beloved is knocking.”

Song of Songs 5:2

Rabbi Akiva said that Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies of Torah because it describes the deep relationship between the Creator and the soul.

The soul is the part of a person that can know the Creator, feel spiritual emotions, and live in relationship with Him.

Why does a relationship with the Creator begin with awe?

The Alter Rebbe explains that relationship with the Creator begins with awe.

Awe is the felt awareness:

“I am living before the Infinite Creator right now.”

That awe contains wonder because His wisdom and the depth of reality are far beyond what we can fully understand, humility because we are not the Source and do not control the whole story, and healthy fear because our choices are real and matter.

How do trust and appreciation turn awe into love?

Trust then changes how that awe feels.

When you trust that the Infinite Creator is good, His greatness does not only feel overwhelming; it becomes something you want to move closer to, it causes love to be felt.

Appreciation can deepen both awe and love because you begin noticing not only His greatness, but the goodness you are receiving from Him.

That intimacy can contain joy because some of His goodness and closeness are already revealed, and sadness because you want more of that goodness and closeness to be revealed.

That sadness can lead to accepting more responsibility.

How does music turn knowledge into felt awareness?

This helps explain why a nigun can affect a person so quickly.

You may already understand intellectually that the Creator is here, that your life comes from Him, and that your choices matter, but your nervous system may not feel those truths strongly.

Music can help those ideas become emotional.

A nigun can bring out wonder, humility, love, joy, and the feeling that you are standing before something much greater than yourself.

It helps knowledge move from the mind into felt awareness.

---

What does it mean that your heart stays awake?

The verse says:

“I sleep, but my heart is awake.”

Part of you can feel distracted, tired, numb, or distant while another part still wants relationship.

The nigun gives that part a voice.

It can help you feel:

“I still want to know You.”

“I still want more of Your goodness revealed.”

“I still want to come closer.”

That longing is one of the raw ingredients of love.

---

How can every breath become praise?

King David says:

“Let every soul praise G-d.”

Psalm 150:6

Jewish teachings also connect the words neshamah, soul, and neshimah, breath.

The idea is that life itself can become praise when you notice Who is giving it.

Every breath can remind you:

“I am receiving life right now.”

That appreciation can deepen awe and love.

---

Why can music awaken more than explanation alone?

A nigun does not create the relationship from nothing.

It helps the nervous system notice a relationship that the mind may already believe is real.

The soul wants closeness.

The breath is already being given.

The Creator is already near.

The nigun helps more of you feel it.

That is why music can sometimes awaken awe, love, joy, and desire faster than explanation alone.

It helps you hear the knock that was already there.

Questions people ask

How does a nigun help you feel what you already believe?

A nigun does not teach you something new. You may already understand that the Creator is here, that your life comes from Him, and that your choices matter, yet your nervous system may not feel those truths strongly. Music helps those ideas become emotional, so knowledge moves from the mind into felt awareness.

What does awe of the Creator feel like?

The Alter Rebbe explains that awe comes first. Awe is the felt awareness that you are living before the Infinite Creator right now. It holds wonder, because His wisdom is far beyond what we can understand, humility, because we are not the Source, and healthy fear, because our choices are real and matter.

What does “I sleep, but my heart is awake” mean?

The verse describes two parts at once. Part of you can feel distracted, tired, numb, or distant, while another part still wants relationship. The nigun gives that quieter part a voice, so you can feel, “I still want to know You,” and “I still want to come closer.” That longing is one of the raw ingredients of love.

Which emotional skills does listening to a nigun practice?

Three emotional skills show up in this teaching. The first is awareness: noticing that you are living before the Infinite Creator right now. The second is appreciation, noticing not only His greatness but the goodness you are receiving. The third is feeling sadness safely, because that sadness can lead to accepting more responsibility.

The blog lists all the difference patterns to study, understanding patterns is how one can develop 'Daas' [felt knowing].
Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
