One purpose of praying at the grave of a righteous person is that their life can help you feel what unconditional care and closeness to the Creator are supposed to feel like.
What does praying at the grave help you notice?
That experience can make it easier to notice what you are really asking for, put your needs into words, and feel that your inner world matters.
Sharing your requests in the presence of that soul can strengthen the feeling that your voice matters.
Are you praying to the soul or to G-d?
But you are not pleading to the soul.
You are turning to the Creator.
You can also ask that righteous soul to pray for you, but the relationship itself is with G-d.
And the moment you turn to Him, relationship is already happening.
How does prayer deepen awe?
Prayer can then deepen awe.
Awe is the felt awareness:
“I am living before the Infinite Creator right now.”
It contains wonder, because His wisdom and depth are beyond what you can fully understand.
It contains humility, because you are not the Source, you do not control reality, and you do not see the whole story.
And it contains healthy fear, because the relationship is real and your choices matter.
The more honestly you speak, the more emotionally real that awareness can become.
You are no longer only thinking about G-d.
You are speaking before Him.
How does love grow inside that awe?
And love can deepen inside that awe.
As you notice His goodness, appreciation grows.
That appreciation can bring joy because some of His goodness and closeness are already revealed.
The intimacy can also bring sadness because you want more of that goodness and closeness to be revealed.
You may feel:
“I am grateful You are near.”
“I want to know You more.”
“I want to feel Your closeness more clearly.”
“I want more of Your goodness revealed.”
That sadness can become longing, and longing is one of the raw ingredients of love.
Is prayer only about feeling joy?
So prayer is not simply about trying to feel joy.
It can deepen awe through wonder, humility, and healthy fear.
It can deepen love through appreciation, joy, sadness, and longing.
And the Creator’s instructions give that love a form through boundaries, responsibility, and choices that reveal more goodness in the world.
