High self-esteem is not believing you are better than other people

High self-esteem is not believing you are better than other people.

It is believing you are treasured, that your life has meaning, and that your choices matter.

That belief is strengthened every time you notice yourself choosing honesty, responsibility, kindness, courage, or healthy boundaries.

Every good choice becomes evidence that your life matters.

Self-forgiveness protects high self-esteem.

Many people think forgiving yourself means believing, “My choices did not matter.”

But it means the opposite.

When you forgive yourself, you stop using all your energy to hide from guilt, shame, or regret.

That gives you the courage to look honestly at your choices.

Instead of asking, “How do I get away from this feeling?”

You begin asking, “What can I learn from this?”

Then you take responsibility.

You admit what you did without making excuses.

You repair what you can.

You apologize where it is appropriate.

You accept the consequences that cannot be changed.

And you choose differently the next time.

That is when you realize more deeply that your choices matter.

Not because your mistakes make you less treasured.

But because your choices can bring more goodness into the world.

Self-forgiveness does not make responsibility smaller.

It makes responsibility possible.

And every time you make another good choice and notice it, you strengthen the belief that your life matters.

"High self-esteem is not believing you're better than other people. It's believing you are treasured, and that your life and choices matter."
