Some melodies do more than awaken emotion. They shape your personality.

The Sixth Chabad Rebbe

taught that the nigun “The Beinoni” should be learned and sung repeatedly because it can train the way a person responds to inner struggle.

The nigun carries a feeling of struggle, effort, and return.

As you sing it repeatedly, you practice staying present while two parts of you pull in different directions.

Usually, an unwanted desire can quickly create shame, fear, or the feeling that you have already failed.

That reaction can make the desire feel even stronger.

But even an unwanted desire may be searching for intimacy, comfort, or the feeling of being whole, just in the wrong place.

The nigun helps create space between what you feel and what you choose.

Your nervous system begins learning:

“I can feel this desire without panicking.”

“I can notice this part of myself without becoming ashamed.”

“I do not have to act immediately.”

“I can return to the direction I truly want.”

That inner space also makes deeper spiritual feelings possible.

When the nervous system is fully caught in shame, fear, or desire, it becomes harder to notice the Creator.

But when you can stay present without being controlled by what you feel, your mind becomes more open.

You can begin thinking about the Creator’s greatness by noticing the patterns of infinite wisdom around you:

the order and beauty of nature,

the way the body knows how to heal,

the way one act of kindness can change another person’s emotional world,

the way love, truth, and meaning can reach deeper than physical pleasure,

and the way every part of existence depends on a Source beyond itself.

These thoughts can awaken awe.

Awe is the feeling that "I am standing before the Creator right now."

You begin to feel that reality is much deeper than what appears on the surface, and that your life is taking place in His presence.

And when you recognize that the Creator who is beyond all understanding gives you life, knows your struggle, and gives you the ability to return, awe can begin to awaken love.

The nigun does not force awe and love.

It helps develop the inner strength needed to stay present long enough for those feelings to grow.

Over time, inner conflict can feel less like proof that something is wrong with you and more like a moment in which you can choose where your desire for intimacy will lead you.

This is the personality of the beinoni.

Not someone who never feels pulled in the wrong direction, but someone who can hold that struggle, return to the Creator, and allow awe and love to guide what happens next.

"Some melodies do more than awaken emotion. They shape your personality."
