The deepest evidence of compassion is what you keep caring about when caring becomes costly.
For more than 2,000 years, Jewish communities lived through persecution, expulsions, forced conversions, and enormous pressure to abandon their relationship with the Infinite Creator.
Yet generation after generation, Jews kept choosing connection.
That history can help us understand something deeper about the Jewish personality.
⸻
Does everything depend on the Creator, even our ability to choose?
According to Chassidus [Jewish mysticism], everything that exists depends on the Creator for its existence.
Our bodies, intelligence, emotions, physical matter, and even our ability to choose exist because He chose creation.
But He also gave human beings real free choice.
That means His goodness is not automatically expressed through every human choice.
A person can take the life, intelligence, and freedom they were given and use them to choose compassion.
Or they can use those same gifts to choose cruelty.
The ability to choose comes from the Creator.
The cruelty is the direction the human being chose.
⸻
Why is goodness not automatic?
Even the possibility of choosing against His purpose has a purpose.
If goodness were automatic, we would not truly help build a world of goodness.
Real free choice allows us to become partners in creation.
We can create more suffering, or we can take responsibility for revealing more goodness.
This is why human cruelty does not mean the Creator wanted the cruelty.
A person can use free choice to create terrible suffering, while another person can use free choice inside that suffering to keep choosing relationship, responsibility, and goodness.
⸻
What makes Jewish history especially meaningful?
This makes Jewish history especially meaningful.
The deepest evidence is not simply that Jews suffered for more than 2,000 years.
It is what they continued choosing while suffering.
Again and again, Jewish people chose to care about the Creator, His instructions, and the purpose He gave creation, even when walking away could have been easier or safer.
The same free choice that allows one human being to persecute another also allows the person being persecuted to say:
“Your cruelty will not decide what I become.”
⸻
This helps explain why Chassidus describes the Jewish personality as containing a G-dly soul, a deep expression of the Creator’s compassion and free choice.
Compassion is not only feeling bad when someone suffers.
It is using your freedom to care about goodness, another person, and the purpose of creation even when selfishness offers an easier path.
Jewish history gives us thousands of years of examples of that choice being made under extreme conditions.
⸻
Is compassion limited to the G-dly soul?
But love and compassion are not limited to the G-dly soul.
Every human personality contains what we can call a soul of love.
It is the part of us that can want connection, care about another person, enjoy closeness, form relationships, and grow in compassion.
Every human being is also made in the Creator’s image.
We have access to intelligence and real free choice.
So every human being can take that capacity for love and freely develop it into deeper compassion.
The G-dly soul represents an even deeper expression of compassion and free choice, but the ability to love, care, and choose goodness belongs to humanity.
⸻
Why did the Creator choose a physical world?
This connects to why the Creator chose a physical world where separation can feel so real.
The lowest form of existence can experience:
“I am separate. I can choose what I want.”
And from inside that experience, a human being can freely choose to use their body, intelligence, personality, and soul of love to reveal goodness.
That is how physical existence can become part of the Creator’s purpose.
Not because goodness was automatic.
Because we were given real free choice and chose to help reveal it.
⸻
Does the Creator’s purpose include all humanity?
The Jewish story is one powerful historical example of what can happen when generations keep choosing that purpose, even when the choice becomes incredibly costly.
But the purpose includes all humanity.
Every human personality has the ability to love.
Every human being is made in His image, with intelligence and real free choice.
And every person can use those gifts to help the lowest physical reality become part of the Creator’s purpose through greater goodness, compassion, and relationship.

The blog lists all the difference patterns to study, understanding patterns is how one can develop 'Daas' [felt knowing].
Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
