Most people think intimacy is about finding the right person

Often, it is about healing the patterns that stop you from showing up.

The adaptive nervous system learns patterns to help you survive difficult experiences, beginning in childhood.

What Do Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn Sound Like?

Fight says:

“I need to protect myself.”

Flight says:

“I need to get away from this, I’ll become busy with eating or work.”

Freeze says:

“I don’t know what to do, I don’t have words for feelings.”

Fawn (people-pleasing) says:

“I need to keep everyone happy.”

These are survival patterns.

How Do Survival Patterns Take Over Relationships?

The problem is that many people build relationships through these patterns.

The survival patterns begin guiding the personality more than relationship patterns.

1. Protection becomes easier than vulnerability.

2. Avoidance becomes easier than communication.

3. People-pleasing becomes easier than honesty.

4. Withdrawal becomes easier than staying present.

What Does Real Intimacy Actually Require?

Intimacy requires a different set of patterns.

1. Trust.

2. Open communication.

3. Responsibility.

4. Vulnerability.

The ability to stay connected when emotions become uncomfortable.

Many people want deeper relationships.

But their adaptive nervous system is still trying to keep them safe from experiences that are no longer happening.

The more awareness you have of your nervous system patterns, the more freedom you have to choose connection instead of protection.

Awareness requires a lot of education so you can get better at practicing compassion, boundaries and self-forgiveness.

“Most people do not bring their whole personality into a relationship. They bring their survival patterns.”

Questions people ask

What are the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn survival patterns?

These are patterns the adaptive nervous system learns to help you survive hard experiences that started in childhood. Fight protects itself. Flight gets busy with eating or work to get away. Freeze has no words for feelings. Fawn, which is people-pleasing, works to keep everyone happy. All four are ways to stay safe.

Why do survival patterns get in the way of intimacy?

Many people build relationships through survival patterns instead of true connection. Protection becomes easier than vulnerability, avoidance easier than communication, people-pleasing easier than honesty, and withdrawal easier than staying present. Practicing the emotional skill of responsibility means noticing this and choosing connection over old protection.

Does finding the right partner automatically create intimacy?

Not automatically. Real intimacy needs a different set of patterns than survival does: trust, open communication, responsibility, and vulnerability, plus staying connected when emotions feel uncomfortable. These are emotional skills anyone can practice and build, and they do not appear just because you found the right partner.

How can I become more aware of my own nervous system patterns?

Awareness takes real education, not just willpower. Practicing the emotional skills of self-compassion, boundaries, and self-forgiveness makes that awareness easier to build. The more aware you are of your own nervous system patterns, the more freedom you have to choose connection over protection the next time an old pattern shows up.

The blog lists all the difference patterns to study, understanding patterns is how one can develop 'Daas' [felt knowing].
Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
