But everyone does.
You can believe the cause of the universe is random.
You can believe it exists but is too distant or mysterious to know anything about.
Or you can believe that what exists within the universe teaches us something about its cause.
“If every thing depended on something else, and there were no first cause, nothing would exist.” – Maimonides
The universe contains laws, patterns, consistency, mathematics, life, consciousness, relationship, choice, and the ability to give.
From those observations, a person may conclude that the cause of the universe has intelligence.
That it has free choice.
That giving is not an accident.
That creating and sustaining existence is an expression of a desire to give.
And that the pleasure involved in giving does not change the Creator, because a cause greater than the universe is not dependent on the universe.
Different beliefs create different emotional worlds.
If reality is ultimately random, the nervous system learns to live in a universe with no ultimate purpose.
If reality is unknowable, the nervous system learns to live with uncertainty about the deepest questions of existence.
If reality comes from an intelligent and giving Creator, the nervous system learns to live in a universe where relationship, responsibility, and meaning are built into existence itself.
Beliefs are not only ideas.
They shape the emotions a person can access.
Some beliefs make it easier to experience awe, love, trust, gratitude, and joy.
Some make guilt, shame, fear, loneliness, or uncertainty more common.
Your beliefs become the reality your nervous system practices living inside every day.
_______________
We can study creation, the universe, in order to develop logical beliefs about the cause. Creation is filled with patterns to study.
“Your beliefs about the cause of the universe are usually based on what you notice within the universe itself.”
