I used to think “reward” meant something later, like a gift after doing the right thing.
But the Hebrew Bible teaches something deeper:
The reward for a commandment is the commandment itself.
The punishment for a sin is the sin itself.
⸻
What does that mean?
When you choose a commandment, you choose connection.
You feel awe, love for the Creator, warmth toward people.
Your soul breathes easier.
When you choose a sin, you choose distance.
You feel alone, disconnected from what your soul really wants.
Your soul feels caged.
So why does sin sometimes feel good?
Because the ego lives in fear—and sin numbs it for a moment.
But it’s salt water: comfort now, thirst later.
⸻
But here’s what's happening:
For some of us, connection feels… scary.
Past trauma can wire our nervous system to protect us from what we actually desire.
That shows up as:
• Fight – Pushing people away.
• Flight – Running from closeness.
• Freeze – Going numb.
• Fawn – Losing yourself to please others.
⸻
The way back to connection:
Awareness – Notice the patterns when they appear.
Compassion + Boundaries
Self-forgiveness – For yourself and others.
The reward isn’t something you wait for.
It’s what you feel the moment you choose connection over fear.
⸻
Which pattern—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn—do you notice most in yourself?
"G-d isn't "punishing" you through pain. Instead, you're experiencing what it feels like to be far from the live and connection you desire."
Explore the NextSelf Blog. Start with this post explaining the world of souls. And my Youtube. Content is published to this facebook first and a few days later, to the blog.
The blog lists all the difference patterns to study, understanding patterns is how one can develop 'Daas' [felt knowing].
Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
