Having an opinion

Having an opinion does not mean you are in relationship with anyone.

“Survival mode thinks having an opinion means having a relationship. It doesn’t. Having an opinion can still be control, fear, or self protection. Relationship begins when curiosity begins. “

Survival mode can still have a lot of opinions.

It can judge quickly.

It can explain a lot.

It can argue with confidence.

It can sound engaged.

But that is not the same as relationship. Relationship begins when curiosity begins. Curiosity means I am not just protecting my position.

I am trying to understand.

I am making room for something outside my current fear, habit, or conclusion.

I am willing to learn what is actually here.

In survival mode, a person often mistakes mental activity for connection. They think, “I have thoughts about this person, so I’m relating.” But many times they are only reacting.

They are defending, predicting, controlling, or protecting themselves.

That is not relationship mode. That is survival mode talking.

Relationship mode is not proved by having an opinion. It is proved by having curiosity.

You can have strong opinions and still not be relational.

You can speak a lot and still not be curious.

You can care and still not be open.

Curiosity is what makes relationship possible, because curiosity means the other person is real to you, not just your trigger, your fear, or your idea.
