taught that the nigun “The Beinoni” should be learned and sung repeatedly because it can train the way a person responds to inner struggle.
The nigun carries a feeling of struggle, effort, and return.
Listen to the nigun “The Beinoni” (Seder Nigunim ft. Eli Marcus)
What happens when you sing the nigun again and again?
As you sing it repeatedly, you practice staying present while two parts of you pull in different directions.
Usually, an unwanted desire can quickly create shame, fear, or the feeling that you have already failed.
That reaction can make the desire feel even stronger.
But even an unwanted desire may be searching for intimacy, comfort, or the feeling of being whole, just in the wrong place.

The nigun helps create space between what you feel and what you choose.
How does the nigun help your nervous system?
Your nervous system begins learning:
“I can feel this desire without panicking.”
“I can notice this part of myself without becoming ashamed.”
“I do not have to act immediately.”
“I can return to the direction I truly want.”

That inner space also makes deeper spiritual feelings possible.
How does inner space open the door to awe?
When the nervous system is fully caught in shame, fear, or desire, it becomes harder to notice the Creator.
But when you can stay present without being controlled by what you feel, your mind becomes more open.
You can begin thinking about the Creator’s greatness by noticing the patterns of infinite wisdom around you:
the order and beauty of nature,
the way the body knows how to heal,
the way one act of kindness can change another person’s emotional world,
the way love, truth, and meaning can reach deeper than physical pleasure,
and the way every part of existence depends on a Source beyond itself.
These thoughts can awaken awe.
Awe is the feeling that "I am standing before the Creator right now."
You begin to feel that reality is much deeper than what appears on the surface, and that your life is taking place in His presence.
And when you recognize that the Creator who is beyond all understanding gives you life, knows your struggle, and gives you the ability to return, awe can begin to awaken love.

The nigun does not force awe and love.
It helps develop the inner strength needed to stay present long enough for those feelings to grow.
What is the personality of the beinoni?
Over time, inner conflict can feel less like proof that something is wrong with you and more like a moment in which you can choose where your desire for intimacy will lead you.
This is the personality of the beinoni.
Not someone who never feels pulled in the wrong direction, but someone who can hold that struggle, return to the Creator, and allow awe and love to guide what happens next.

Questions people ask
What is the nigun “The Beinoni”?
It is a Chabad melody that the Sixth Chabad Rebbe taught should be learned and sung repeatedly. He taught this because the nigun can train the way a person responds to inner struggle. The melody itself carries a feeling of struggle, effort, and return, so singing it becomes a kind of practice.
How can singing a melody help with unwanted desires?
Singing the nigun helps create space between what you feel and what you choose. Your nervous system slowly learns that you can feel a desire without panicking, notice it without shame, and wait instead of acting right away. From that calmer place, you can return to the direction you truly want.
What does “beinoni” mean in this article?
In this article, the beinoni is a personality, not a person who never struggles. A beinoni still feels pulled in the wrong direction sometimes. The difference is that they can hold that struggle, stay present, return to the Creator, and let awe and love guide what happens next.
Does the nigun make you feel awe and love right away?
No. The nigun does not force awe and love. It builds the inner strength you need to stay present long enough for those feelings to grow. When you are not controlled by shame, fear, or desire, your mind becomes more open, and noticing the Creator’s wisdom can awaken awe.
“Some melodies do more than awaken emotion. They shape your personality.”

Update: As awe, trust, and love deepen, they can allow greater openness and intimacy with the Creator. That intimacy can include sadness when you notice how much more of His goodness can be revealed.
